Are we more critical of judging ourselves more than others do?
Interestingly, I came across a new Dove campaign, presented in an online video, shows a forensic sketch artist, Gil Zamora who is asked to draw a series of women based only on their descriptions. This is to help with an interesting experiment about self perception.
Gil Zamora first sketched a series of women as they described themselves and then he sketched portraits of the same women based on descriptions of people who had met them. The difference between the two drawings, self descriptions vs others' descriptions, were astonishing.
In the video, you can hear the women say: "I've crow's feet", "my mom told me I had a big jaw", "I have a pretty big forehead", "I have protruding chin.", these are some of the many physical descriptions that the women criticized about themselves.
When Zamora draws another sketch of the same woman, only this time it is based on how someone else describes her. The sketch portraits are then hung side by side and women are asked to compare them. In every portraits, the second sketch is more beautiful than the first.
"You are more beautiful than you think" that's the message. It brought tears of joy to some of the participants because they do not realized how beautiful they are.
Those women seemed to have a new appreciation for self, after they see the two sketches of themselves.
One of the participant says:"We spend a lot of time as women analyzing and trying to fix the things that aren't quite right." "We should spend more time appreciating the things that we do like."
Personally, when I was a young school girl, I was always being called the "Ugly duckling". I was plumb, short, dark and looked nerdy with my spectacles. I was struggling with poor self-esteem for many years. Until there comes a day that I was so drained of feeling unattractive and unworthy, I decided to let go of the need to be perfect, and learned self acceptance. Besides, we all know the story of ugly duckling that turned into a beautiful swan.
Self acceptance is all about appreciating yourself. The beauty you hope to find in the world is what you are made of, and the happiness you are searching for is your true nature. Be thankful for your God's given gifts. Yes, you are more beautiful than you think (or what your critics says about you). Today, be open to accept the fact that beauty is around because you are around, and happiness is here because you are here, and hope is shining brilliantly because you are shining brilliantly. Seek for the beauty in you because that is what you will find.
